Second Grade Policies and Procedures Below you will find important information regarding basic second grade policies. Our second grade team works collaboratively to plan our units of study, special events, and consistent expectations for our students. We also communicate on a weekly basis with our Tuesday folders and monthly with a grade level newsletter. Supplies/Personal Belongings Please check periodically with your child to insure that they have the necessary school supplies. Glue sticks, pencils, and crayons are used frequently and may need to be replenished. Students are asked to keep personal items and toys at home unless it is a special sharing time.
Homework Each MONDAY, beginning September 10th, your child will receive their homework folder. It will contain one or two math pages that reinforce math skills previously taught, a list of Letterland Unit words for the week, and a reading log for your child to record what literature they are reading. Your child’s reading log will need to be signed once a week as a part of completing their homework assignment. A list of possible activities will be sent home for practicing Letterland words. You may choose to do as many of these, or any other methods, as you see fit for practicing the words for the week. These are not to be turned in but are intended to help prepare your child for Friday's Spelling test. We recommend pacing your homework expectations out over the week instead of just “getting it done” at once. This will allow for reinforcement and gives each family the ability to adjust the work according to their other activities or obligations. Please let us know if you need any further assistance regarding homework. All homework is due by FRIDAY.
Discipline Plan Second graders are encouraged to be responsible for their actions. School wide expectations are followed to encourage safety, accountability, independence, and leadership. Individual behaviors in the classroom are tracked through Class Dojo. Dojo points are awarded daily for observed positive behaviors such as being on task, persistence, working as a team, and working hard. Areas for which the student needs improvement are tracked, but no points are taken away (at this time). Should the negative behaviors become increasingly common and/or intensify, points may be deducted. Class Dojo points are used to make "purchases" from a list of classroom rewards. A report will be sent home each Tuesday in your child's plastic Tuesday folder which will show the number of positive Dojo points received and a notation of behaviors that he/she needs to work on, if any. As we are beginning the school year and establishing rules and expectations, I hope you understand the importance of me being very firm about proper behavior from the beginning. Discussing your expectations with your child and your support are essential for your child to be successful in the classroom.
Student Information/Absences If you have not already done so, please return your child’s locator card and information forms as soon as possible. If your child is taking any medication at school, please make sure that the proper forms are on file in the office. Illness is the primary excused absence. Family events and special trips are considered unexcused. Please make sure that your child makes up any work they miss during an absence. Having your child to school on time is also important in helping your child’s routine. Please let me know if your child will be leaving early for any special appointments. You will need to sign your child out in the office in order for me to release him/her from class. I appreciate your help in supporting your child.
